How To Make Doggie S’Mores Dog Treats Recipe

There’s nothing quite like gathering around a campfire to toast marshmallows. It’s even better when someone brings graham crackers and chocolate, so everyone can make s’mores! Of course, your dog would love to join in, but the ingredients in a real s’more can make your dog very sick. Not to worry—we’ve got a great recipe for doggie s’mores that your pet will love! This article contains simple instructions for making homemade s’mores dog treats.

What makes human s’mores so dangerous for dogs, anyway? For one thing, chocolate is off the menu for dogs since it contains theobromine. Theobromine gives humans a “pick-me-up” feeling, which helps to explain why it’s hard for us to stop eating chocolate once we start. However, too much of this substance can cause neurological symptoms and other problems for your dog.  To avoid an emergency vet visit, it’s best to steer clear.

What about marshmallows? Unfortunately, these are also very damaging to your pet’s health. For one thing, most marshmallows on the shelf contain artificial additives that can be toxic to your dog. Even the sugar sources in marshmallows can harm dogs. Your pet’s metabolism isn’t capable of processing such an intense hit of sugar in a healthy way. This brings us to the graham crackers in human s’mores. They’re also not recommended for dogs. Graham crackers may contain harmful additives and can cause canine diabetes and obesity if eaten regularly.

To share the s’mores experience with your dog, show them a little extra love by making a canine version just for them. Our recipe uses carob chips as a chocolate alternative. Carob powder is made in much the same way as cocoa powder, but it’s non-toxic to your dog. If you’re new to carob, try a few chips and see what you think! If you make the recipe below with milk instead of broth, there’s no reason why you can’t munch on a “doggie s’more” along with your pet. At Dan’s Pet Care, we think dog treats should be high-quality enough for people, too!

Ingredients:

1 c peanut butter, plus additional peanut butter or cream cheese for making sandwiches

1 c milk or plain, unseasoned, fat-free chicken broth

2 T baking powder

2 c flour

1 12-oz package carob chips

First, to make the biscuits, combine the flour and baking powder. In another bowl, combine the peanut butter and milk until smooth. Combine the wet and dry ingredients to form a dough. Roll it out on a floured surface and cut into rectangles to resemble graham crackers. Bake for 15-20 minutes at 375 degrees.

After your biscuits have cooled, it’s time to assemble your s’mores! First, melt the carob chips in a small saucepan on the stovetop. Then, spread a thin layer of melted carob onto one side of each biscuit. Put two biscuits together to form a sandwich, with the carob-coated side facing inward. In between each biscuit, spread a thin layer of peanut butter or cream cheese.

That’s it! Your dog is sure to love these simple, delicious morsels. The next time you get together with friends or family to make s’mores, you won’t have to leave your dog out of the fun!
